A Mystery, a Mirror, and Marriage

'So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.'

- Genesis 2:21-25

“But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

- ‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭6‬-‭9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God hid a mystery in marriage.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.”

- Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭31‬-‭32‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God made marriage to mirror the gospel.

This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church

- ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭32‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Society’s attempts to conduct romantic relationships apart from God don’t mirror the gospel.

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you...”

- ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭9‬-‭11a ‭ESV‬‬

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”

- ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭11‬b ‭ESV

We don’t throw stones. We show people to the Cornerstone.

“The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.’”

- ‭‭John‬ ‭8‬:‭3‬-‭11‬ ‭ESV‬‬‬‬
