"God Helps Those Who Help Themselves" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. Have you recognized any of your own “planks,” or problems, over the past week? If so, then what steps did you take to grow as a person and become like Christ?

Main Thought

The popular saying “God helps those who help themselves” can be misleading. It might make us think that we need to use our God-given gifts to be “self made,” or to “pull ourselves up by our bootstraps.” We can try to do things in our own strengths] apart from God, but He’ll rarely help us when we’ve left Him out of the picture. Meanwhile, we often ignore or cover up our weaknesses. But God can give us the ability to excel in spite of our weaknesses. God helps those who help themselves, and God helps those who can’t help themselves! If we want God’s help in our strengths and weaknesses, then we need to come to Him in humility and faith for help.

Main Passages

...If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.
- Philippians 3:4-7

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.
- Luke 15:22-24

“Only God Can Judge Me” Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How has gratitude to God for His mercy and grace impacted your life?

Main Thought

One of the most popular passages in the Bible, even among non-believers, is: “Judge not, or you too shall be judged.” Most of us want to escape judgement even while we judge others. We don’t want to be judged because acceptance, and we judge to make it easier to accept ourselves. Jesus brings a unique perspective to this problem. He has the right to judge because He set a perfect standard; however, He suspends His right to offer patient acceptance and a fresh start instead. Jesus even teaches us a good way to judge. We start by judging ourselves. We commit to the process of becoming more like Christ as we pull the “planks” out of our own eyes. Then, we take newfound perspective and use it to judge others’ “specks.” (The size difference between these things highlight our focus in judging ourselves and others). If we judge with love and grace at all times, then we’re more likely to receive that grace from others like we already do from God.

Main Passages

7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
- Matthew 7:1-5

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them...
- Matthew 7:15-16

12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you...
- Matthew 7:12

Discussion Questions

  1. What can we learn about God based on the main passages above?

  2. Why is it hard to address our own “planks” and problems?

  3. Think about a recent moment in which you judged someone else. What specific “plank” - be it some selfish action or attitude - does that reveal about you?

Apply

  1. How can you rid yourself of a “plank” and grow as a person, with the goal of becoming more like Jesus? Ask God to help you work on your own planks this week. If the opportunity arises after processing your own problems, then speak up about someone else’s “speck” with God’s love and grace.

"You Get What You Deserve" Discussion Guide

Main Thought

“What goes around comes back around.” “You reap what you sow.” Phrases like these communicate the idea that we’ll eventually “get what we deserve.” This is often true, and we dislike getting less than we deserve! Yet there’s at least one thing we deserve that we should be happy about not receiving. God, in His mercy, withholds the punishment we deserve for our sin. Jesus received that punishment on the Cross; He got what we deserved. Then, in His Grace, God offers the love and eternal life that Jesus deserved for His perfect obedience. We get what Jesus deserved. This exchange is the foundation of the Christian faith.

Main Passages

39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
- Luke 23:39-43

4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved…
- Ephesians 2:4-5

Discussion Questions

  1. What can we learn about God based on the main passages above?

  2. Have you ever been happy about getting less than you deserve, perhaps by avoiding a consequence or punishment? On the other hand, have you ever found joy in receiving something good that you did not deserve? What happened?

  3. Do you believe the Gospel - the news about Jesus receiving the punishment we deserved, and offering us the life that He deserved? If so, then how should it shape your attitudes and actions in response?

Apply

  1. Take your response to question three and apply it to your life this week!

"What Do I Do?" Discussion Guide

Main Thought

A lot of things are incredibly clear in the Bible. Other things aren’t quite as clear. Are there movies or TV shows that Christians shouldn’t watch? What holidays can we celebrate, and what customs can we practice? These are great questions! In situations like these, the Word of God doesn’t make a universal decision for every believer. Instead, it teaches us to make decisions that honor God. Here are three questions we can ask ourselves when we’re confused about what we should, or shouldn’t, do as Christians:

  • Am I willing to let God teach me in this area?

  • Will this issue become an obstacle or distraction in my walk with God?

  • Am I putting others first, and am I willing to sacrifice my “freedoms” for others?

Genuine, sacrificial love guides these questions. If we’re focused on loving God and other people, then it’s difficult to make the wrong choice when it comes to issues that we don’t understand. We can navigate unclear issues when we’re guided by the clear standard of love.

Main Passages

“Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.”
- ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭8:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
- 1 Corinthians 8:6

9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.
- 1 Corinthians 8:9

Discussion Questions

  1. What can we learn about God based on the main passages above?

  2. Have you ever wondered whether or not you should participate in something because of your beliefs? What did you wonder about, and what did you decide?

  3. Have you ever judged someone else because of their beliefs regarding certain holidays or practices? How can you be more like Jesus and honor God?

Apply

  1. Think through something you watch, celebrate, or practice using the three questions above. Are you honoring God with a clean heart and conscience?

"Don't Throw Away Your Confidence" Discussion Guide

Main Thought

Sometimes, we think that following God should make life easier. That simply isn’t true. We’ll encounter trouble whether or not we’re following God. The difference in suffering for believers is that we have an eternal cause for confidence, and God’s precious promises. The key to experiencing these things is perseverance. God does His will in us, for us, and through us when keep our confidence in Him.

Main Passages

32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34 You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. 35 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”
- Hebrews 10:32-37

Discussion Questions

  1. What can we learn about God based on the main passages above?

  2. What trial or difficulty have you faced recently? What might God be trying to teach you through your trial?

  3. What are you believing God to do for you in the midst of your trial? Can you find that thing as a promise in the Bible?

Apply

Pray together (in groups of two or three) for God to do His will in you, for you, and through you.

"The Afterlife" Discussion Guide

Main Thought

What happens to us after our lives end on earth? Is there an afterlife? The Bible is clear: there is an afterlife, and there are only two options. We can either spend eternity with God or without Him. To spend eternity with God, the ultimate source of goodness, is to spend eternity surrounded by God’s goodness. There is an immediate destination for Christians when our lives end on earth: we will be with Christ in Heaven, but without our bodies. Christ will return to redeem this world one day. The earth will be repaired. Believers will receive new, glorified bodies. As Christians, the source of our confidence is unique because it comes from Christ. He came from eternity to earth, conquered sin and death, and rose again to prove we can trust Him!

Main Passages

6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
- 2 Timothy 4:6–8.

22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
- Philippians 1:21–24.

The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, 2 it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
- Isaiah 35:1-2

"Angel and Demons" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you practically pursue God this past week?

Main Thought

The Bible tells us that two worlds exist: a realm that is visible, and the invisible realm. There are also two sources of spiritual power in the invisible realm. God is holy, all-powerful, and the source of light. Satan, a defeated foe, controls darkness and wants to keep us there in hopes that we’ll be separated from God for eternity. God has Angels and Satan has demons. Both have assignments and influence the natural realm by their actions in the invisible realm. God and His kingdom win in the end, but our experiences are personal and relevant as we experience them in the present. How can we get God’s agents, his angels, to act on our behalf? How can we defeat the demons that wish to torment and destroy us? Our greatest weapon is prayer! Angels are empowered by prayer and demons are empowered by prayer. We turn to our God, who turns His angels loose for us.

Main Passages

16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
- Colossians 1:16-17

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
- Ephesians 6:12

4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
- 2 Corinthians 10:4

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you believe in the invisible realm, where God and his angels - and even Satan and his demons - are active and moving? Does your belief impact your life and daily decisions?

  2. Do you pray and ask God to move for you behind the scenes? Why or why not?

Apply

  1. Think about some of the biggest battles in your personal life. Bring them to God in prayer and ask Him to move in your favor.

"The Pursuit of Pleasure" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you look for ways to prioritize giving love and grace to those around you, or reach out to someone who needs comfort?

Main Thought

Almost everyone pursues pleasure: that feeling of happiness, satisfaction, or enjoyment. We’re surrounded by opportunities to pursue pleasure apart from God. Yet any source of pleasure that the world offers (apart from God) will be fleeting, or temporary. Parties, positions, substances, possessions - they’ll eventually end or run out. You might have also discovered that the world’s pleasures are misleading. They fail to meet expectations, and come with costs and consequences that we do not expect. The greatest pleasure we could ever experience is in God. The love and joy that we find in Him last forever, and they’re truly fulfilling. These things remain in every circumstance. Our desire for healthy habits like reading or exercise grow with time and effort; likewise, our desire for God will grow if we’ll start pursuing Him and continue consistently.

Main Passages

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life —is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
- 1 John 2:15-17

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
- Psalm 16:11

Discussion Questions

  1. Have one of your pursuits of pleasure ever proven to be fleeting (temporary) or misleading (failing to meet expectations)? What happened? How did you respond?

  2. How could you practically pursue God? Why is it hard to maintain those habits?

Apply

  1. Pick one habit that might help you experience God more, preferably something that you aren’t already doing. Try your best to do that consistently over the next week.

"In the Zone" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How does remembering God’s unconditional approval free us?

Main Thought

Pursuing perfection and clinging to comfort. These two things are on opposite ends of a spectrum, and they’re ultimately spiritual problems. Both promise to fulfill us on a deep level - and both fail to deliver! Perfection causes us to strive physically and emotionally; sometimes, it’s motivated by some insecurity. Clinging to comfort can feel good, but it can also cause us to miss God-given opportunities and waste God-given talents. We should allow God to keep us centered. We need to give God our best, because our efforts glorify Him - and we need to rest and trust in His goodness.

Main Passages

20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
- Romans 3:20

33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
- John 16:33

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life —is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
- 1 John 2:15-17

Discussion Questions

  1. There are three types of perfectionism: self-oriented (I need to be perfect), externally-oriented (things need to be perfect), and others-oriented (you need to be perfect). When was the last time you struggled with one of these kinds of perfectionism? How did the struggle make you feel?

  2. Seeking comfort without God (counterfeit comfort) requires no faith and causes us to run from our problems; seeking comfort in God builds faith and helps us face our problems. How have you seen “counterfeit comfort” play out in your life?

Apply

  1. Look for ways to prioritize giving love and grace to those around you, or reach out to someone who needs comfort.

“Approval Addicts” Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you use something you own to bless someone else recently?

Main Thought

Approval can be a good thing. It helps us form community, and it can be used to reinforce us when we’re on the right path. But we can become addicted to approval from other people when it becomes our ultimate source of identity, joy, or love. In such a situation, we’ll do anything - including actions that offend God, hurt people, and ultimately hurt ourselves - to win approval. God’s love sets us free from an addiction to approval. God’s approval is constant because it depends on His grace and not our actions. If we’ll trust and remember God’s opinion of us, then we’ll be set free from being controlled by the opinions of other people

Main Passages

The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
- Proverbs 29:25

10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
- Galatians 1:10

20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
- Galatians 2:20

Discussion Questions

  1. Approval addicts battle three problems: obsessing over what others think, being overly sensitive to criticism, and struggling to say “no.” Which problem most describes you? Why do you have a hard time with that problem?

  2. If we were to prioritize Christ’s approval over the approval of others, how might that change our lives and our relationships?

Apply

  1. Pick some of the following scriptures. (You can read them all if you want!) Read them, think about what they mean, and remember who God says you are this week.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17, 20-21

  • Ephesians 1:7

  • Romans 8:11, 13, and 37

  • Ephesians 2:10

  • Matthew 5:14

"Living with Eternal Perspective" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you pursue success God’s way - in obedience, trust, and humility - over the past week?

Main Thought

Wealth and possessions can be a dynamic tool or a deceiving trap. In today’s consumer-driven society, we often crave “more.” We want more money, more clothes, and more accessories. We want nicer cars and houses. But hearts that are preoccupied with love for possessions struggle to love God, His people, and His purposes. Wealth can never fully satisfy. It doesn’t last. Christians are called to use temporary possessions with a Christ-centered and eternal perspective in mind.

Main Passages

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income…
- Ecclesiastes 5:10, NIV

3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
- Revelation 2:3-4

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
- 1 John 2:15-16

Discussion Questions

  1. Why does wealth seem like a moving target? Why do we always want just a little bit more, even when we know it won’t last forever?

  2. How can you use your temporary possessions to have an eternal impact?

Apply

  1. Use something you own (your car, house, finances) to be a blessing this week.

"Living Under the Influence (of God)" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. Have you been praying for the people around you and asking God for opportunities to share Jesus with them?

Main Thought

Most people desire success. Success can be a good thing, but problems arise when we make it into the ultimate thing. If our success becomes our source of identity and joy, then what happens when we fail? Too many people have been broken by their failures and missed out on God’s fullness for their lives. Success motivated by selfishness often feels insufficient - we always crave more. Another great tragedy of success without God is that it can only be enjoyed on this earth; our great pursuits and passions, without Christ, will pass away.

Lasting success comes when we live under God’s influence. Success that is primarily motivated by a desire to love God is resilient. We need not fear failure, because it will not destroy our joy or identity. Obeying God in trust and humility positions us to receive His help in achieving success that’s enjoyable for us now, impactful to others, and felt throughout eternity.

Main Passages

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” - Matthew 23:12

“and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.” - 1 Kings 2:3

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Matthew 6:19-21

Discussion Questions

  1. How do you define success? What makes you feel successful?

  2. Do you view success as a good thing, an ultimate thing that provides identity and joy, or both? How can you adjust your pursuit of success to love God and others?

"Impact of One" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you encourage someone, sharpen them, or share with them recently?

Main Thought

Sharing Jesus, and playing a part in someone else coming to know Him, is one of the most impactful things we can do on earth. There are so many opportunities to do this, but we don’t always take them. Jesus saw people in need of His love. His heart was moved with compassion. He prayed and acted in love by going to the Cross. God looks to use and empower people who are willing to see, feel, pray, and act like Christ. These individuals will make an impact that goes beyond themselves on earth and in eternity!

Main Passages

35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
- Matthew 9:35-38

9 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him.
- 2 Chronicles 16:9

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
- Matthew 28:19-20

Discussion Questions

  1. Think about someone you know who doesn’t have a relationship with Jesus. How would you describe the way Jesus feels about that person?

  2. Do you know three to five people who don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus? Write their names down somewhere, like in a prayer journal or in your phone. Spend five minutes every day praying for those people. Ask God for an opportunity to invite them to church, or to share the gospel and your testimony.

"Impact of Groups"

Recap:

  1. How can you be a blessing to Las Vegas by partnering with our church and Casa De Luz?

Main Thought

God wants His people to experience life in groups, and it’s impossible to truly follow Jesus without others. We can make a difference in the lives of other people by being a regular part of Christian community, especially in smaller settings. It doesn’t take an “expert” to encourage someone! We all have different backgrounds and experiences, so we can bring those things to the table to teach each other new things. Sharing with others is another sure-fire way to make an impact. We can share our time, gifts, resources, and even our food! The church as a whole is greatly impacted as people get active in groups. More groups means more chances for church members to get closer to God, and more opportunities for those who don’t attend church yet to get connected.

Main Passages

20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
- Matthew 18:20

24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
- Hebrews 10:24-25

Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
- Proverbs 27:17

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
- Acts 2:42

37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
- Matthew 9:37-38

Discussion Questions

  1. What’s one way in which someone from your Community Group (or even a past group) made an impact in your life?

  2. How might God be calling you to make an impact through your Group?

Application

  1. Prayerfully consider joining Every Nation Church Las Vegas’ 2019 Giving Campaign.

"Giving and Generosity" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. What miraculous thing are you asking God to do for you?

Main Thought

Everyone has a God-given desire to make an impact! One way that we can make an impact is through giving. Giving comes from God’s character. God gave humanity life and a world to live in. Jesus gave His life so that we could be reconciled to God and receive the perfect love He offered us. God gave because He loves us; if we love God and other people, then it’s natural that we would give too. We can give our time and strength to serve. We can give our finances to advance causes that honor God. Doing these things will allow us to make an impact that can be felt throughout eternity.

Main Passages

31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
- Genesis 1:31

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
- John 3:16

3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6 So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
- 2 Corinthians 8:3-7

Discussion Questions

  1. In what ways is giving easy for you? In what ways can giving sometimes be difficult?

  2. How might God be calling you to make an impact through giving?

Application

  1. Prayerfully consider joining Every Nation Church Las Vegas’ 2019 Giving Campaign.

"Power Gifts Pt. 2" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you connect to God over the past week?

Main Thought

God is real, and He moves in real ways today! He invites us to stay connected to Him as our Source. It’s important to listen to God as we believe for the miraculous. He may tell us to go, or He may tell us to stay. It’s impossible to move in His power when we move without Him. When we do, we’re like an appliance connected to power: God can do incredible things through us! Here are some of the spiritual gifts God releases to His people, for His glory.

  • FAITH: The gift of faith is the divine strength or ability to believe in God for unseen supernatural results in every area of life.

  • HEALING: The divine strength of ability to act as an intermediary in faith, prayer and by the laying on of hands for the healing of physical and mental illness and pain.

  • MIRACLES: The gift of miracles is the divine strength or ability to alter the natural outcomes of life in a supernatural way through prayer, faith and divine direction.

Main Passages

“And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues…”
- Mark 16:17

"Connection Issues" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. How did you address the flaws and failures in your life and bring them to God over the past week?

Main Thought

People crave connection, and it’s because God designed us to be that way. He wants us to communicate with Him constantly. (Our souls will feel incomplete until we find our fulfillment in Him.) Yet we often experience “connection issues” when trying to connect with God. Perhaps we’re distant from God because of our sin, or maybe we don’t know how to pray. There might be too many distractions in our lives. God sent Jesus to resolve our connection issues! We can come boldly before God, starting from wherever we find ourselves right now.

As an added bonus, some of the spiritual gifts that God gave His Church can help enhance our connection to God in both personal and corporate settings. These include:

  • Knowledge: The divine strength or ability to understand and to bring clarity to situations and circumstances often accompanied by a word from God.

  • Discernment: The divine strength or ability to spiritually identify falsehood and to distinguish between right and wrong motives and situations.

  • Intercession: The divine strength or ability to stand in the gap in prayer for someone, something, or someplace believing for profound results.

Main Passages

As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
- Psalm 42:1-2

17 pray without ceasing…
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17

16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
- Hebrews 4:16

Discussion Questions

  1. The spiritual gifts of knowledge and discernment (specific expressions of prophecy), as well as the gift of intercession (a gift to pray for someone or something), help the Church connect to God. Do you think you have any of these gifts? Have you ever seen them in use?

  2. Do you feel like you have any “connection issues” in your relationship with God? What might be causing those issues?

Application

  1. Resolve your connection issues and get closer to God, either through prayer or in His Word.

"Me vs. Me"

Recap

  1. How have you gotten to know more about God and yourself over the past few weeks?

Main Thought

God has spiritual gifts for His people. They empower us to love Him, serve others, and experience purpose. But we might be our own worst enemies when it comes to encountering these gifts and walking in God’s plan for our lives. Our sins and character flaws can derail us when we don’t deal with them. God transforms us through Christ, and empowers us to overcome our own flaws as we become like Jesus! This can only happen when we acknowledge our faults. If we don’t acknowledge our them, then they’ll thrive in the darkness of our lives. Correcting our character can be painful, but it will protect us and propel us.

Main Passages

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh... 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
- Galatians 5:16, 22-24

3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
- Matthew 7:3-5

30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
- John 3:30

Discussion Questions

  1. How easy is it for you to find your fault, or even find ways in which you need to grow? Why do you think that’s the case?

  2. Think about a current area of difficulty or conflict in your life. How might YOU be able to learn and grow in this situation?

Application

  1. Bring your flaws and failure to God in prayer this week. Find scriptures to address them in the Bible. Ask God to help you change (repent) and become more like Christ.

"Word Gifts Pt. 2" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. Are you beginning to discover or apply your Spiritual Gifts in a Biblical way?

Main Thought

Some of the spiritual gifts can be classified as “word gifts.” The word gifts clarify the nature, actions, and purposes of God. They help us get to know God more. These gifts also help others come to know God through us. Here are three word gifts that you, or someone you know, may have:

  • Wisdom: The special ability that God gives through his spirit, to certain members of the Body of Christ to know how given knowledge, both biblical and practical, may best be applied to specific needs in life, especially in the Body of Christ.

  • Exhortation: The special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to minister words of comfort, consolation, encouragement, and counsel to other members of the Body in such a way that they feel helped and healed.

  • Missionary: The special ability that God gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to minister to others, using their unique gifts, in a culture other than their own.

Main Passages

12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
- 1 Corinthians 2:12-13

8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
- Romans 12:8

15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
- Mark 16:15-18

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you feel you have any of the spiritual gifts mentioned in the Main Thought or passages above?

  2. Has anyone with the gift of wisdom, exhortation, or a missionary gift helped or ministered to you? How so?

Application

  1. Get to know God more through His Word and through prayer.

"Word Gifts Pt. 1" Discussion Guide

Recap

  1. Have you recently expressed your gratitude to someone who served you in a way that made God’s love feel real?

Main Thought

Some of the spiritual gifts can be called “word gifts.” The word gifts clarify the nature, actions, and purposes of God. These things help us draw nearer to God as we understand Him more. As we employ our own God-given word gifts, we’ll be able to draw others to God too. Here are some of these word gifts:

  • Leadership: The gift of leadership is the divine strength or ability to influence people at their level while directing and focusing them on the big picture, vision, or idea.

  • Evangelist: The gift of evangelism is the divine strength or ability to help non-Christians take the necessary steps to becoming Christ followers.

  • Pastor: The gift of pastor/shepherd is the divine strength or ability to care for the personal needs of others by nurturing and mending life issues.

  • Teacher: The gift of teaching is the divine strength or ability to study and learn from the Scriptures primarily to bring understanding and growth to other Christians.

There’s a difference between a spiritual gift and a “spiritual office.” Someone with a gift uses their gift personally. Those who are called to a spiritual office takes this a step further, and equip others to operate in that gift while using it themselves. For example, someone with the gift of evangelism engages those who don’t know Christ. Someone called to the office of an evangelist helps others use the gift of evangelism.

Main Passages

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ...”
- Ephesians‬ ‭4:11-12‬

Discussion Questions

  1. Do you think you have any of the gifts lifted in the Main Thought? How do you use it to serve God and others?

  2. How has someone with one of the aforementioned gifts (or someone who holds the spiritual office) helped your walk with God?

Application

  1. Use your spiritual gifts as a blessing for someone who doesn’t know Christ this week.
