'And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. The Belief

Patterns that Point

'They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”

A pattern was established.

“For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. God desired to dwell among us.

'And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst.’

God’s holiness must remain separate from sin.

Sacrifices taught that sin had a cost.

The sacrifices were insufficient.

God had a plan.

'For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah…”

God’s purpose was fulfilled.

“But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

Jesus came to dwell among us.

'And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. '

Beyond Religion

Religion is the work of man. The Gospel is the work of God.

"Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands."

Jesus, our High Priest, is still at work.

The first covenant was our teacher.

"If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it."

Everything leads to the New Covenant, but only the mature embrace it.

"But this is the new covenant I will make with the people... I will put my laws in their minds... I will write them on their hearts... I will be their God... I will forgive their wickedness... I will never again remember their sins."

"When God speaks of a 'new' covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear."

The Mystery of Melchizedek

'This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.'

Who is Melchizedek?

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. The mystery of Melchizedek teaches us about the ministry of Jesus Christ.

'Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. '

The mystery of Melchizedek reveals who we are in Christ.

…the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.”

A Guide for Growing Up

'About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.'

God made us to grow in spiritual maturity.

There’s more than one measure of spiritual maturity.

Spiritual maturity includes growing in our knowledge of God.

You need milk, not solid food...

He Who Wields the Word

The Word of God is alive.

Where We Reside

Beware a “hardened heart.”

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. '

High Above All

Jesus is high above all.

He is God Most High.

'The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.'

He holds the place of highest honor and authority.

'So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? He is the great High Priest.
