I Want More

I Want More Love

4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

- John 15:4-10

We’re already loved.

9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you…

- John 15:9a

We don’t always experience God’s love.

15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

- Romans 7:15

Jesus told us to abide in Him.

We can live with a greater awareness of God’s love.

10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love…

- John 15:10a

When we abide, we thrive.

- John 15:4-5

I Want More Joy

Life is hard.

1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

- John 16:1-4

We’re supposed to “take heart.”

32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

- John 16:32-33

Jesus wants to give us joy.

16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.”

- John 16:16

18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice…

- John 16:18-22a

We can look back at the Resurrection - and we can look forward to the reunion.

22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice…

- John 16:22a

When God gives us joy, nothing can take it away.

In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

- John 16:32-33

…and no one will take your joy from you.

- John 16:22b

I Want More Peace

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

- John 14:27, ESV

Peace from God.

“...my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you…”

- John 14:27

Peace with God.

23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

- John 14:23

Peace in God.

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you...

- John 14:26-27b

We find peace when we focus on God.

3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
